Q. 109. Doth God forbid in this commandment only adultery and such like gross sins?
A. Adultery
1. What is the seventh commandment?
“Thou shalt not commit adultery.” Exodus 20:14; Deuteronomy 5:18.
2. What does the seventh commandment teach us?
That all uncleanness is accursed of God, and that therefore we must with all our hearts detest the same and live chastely and temperately, whether in marriage or in single life. Leviticus 18; I Thessalonians 4:3, 4; Proverbs 5:18-21; Hebrews 13:4.
3. What do the Scriptures teach about divorce?
To divorce one’s spouse for any other reason than fornication is a violation of the seventh commandment. Matthew 5:31, 32; 19:9.
4. What do the Scriptures teach about remarriage after divorce?
Since divorce does not sever the bond of marriage into which two have entered, remarriage would also violate the seventh commandment. Mark 10:11, 12; Luke 16:18; Romans 7:1-3; I Corinthians 7:10, 11.
5. Does God forbid in the seventh commandment only adultery and similar gross sins?
